The world is a really bad place. No, seriously! Alas, there is a solution to our most pressing social problems: Let’s all become Victorians. This is, crudely oversimplified of course, the advice Gertude Himmelfarb offers in her book The De-Moralization of Society – From Victorian Virtues to Modern Values. As the title suggests, it aspires to be much more than just another account of Victorian England. Himmelfarb, who, besides being an eminent historian, is the wife of prominent neoconservative Irving Kristol, tackles current social issues as well which, according to her view, haven’t really changed that much since the late 19th century.

When Himmelfarb looks at the current state of the Western world, she sees decay everywhere. She lists crime rates along with data on poverty, illiteracy and illegitimacy as evidence of her cultural criticism which isn’t entirely void of the Spenglerian undertones commonly found in conservative writing. It is neither very original nor in any way disputable to point out that the rapid and ongoing liberalization since at least the mid-20th century has had some negative side effects. The strenght of this book therefore clearly does not lie in its diagnosis of current social challenges – Himmelfarb’s findings on these matters could be summarized with this post’s first sentence. It actually doesn’t get much subtler than that.

Nevertheless, the book provides a vivid account of the ambivalent society Victorian England actually was as opposed to the stereotypical view of this particular era. Victorians, according to common conception, were stiff moralists to the point of self-righteousness bound by many social restrictions and living in an era marked by crass inequalities between classes and sexes. Himmelfarb challenges such notions by poiting out that, while Victorian society certainly would not satisfy our current high standards concerning liberty and equality, it was never as monolithic as prejudice suggests. Social reform efforts directed at the betterment of the lower classes abounded, culture, science as well as philosophy flourished and women’s rights became one of the most prominent social issues among the educated. Furthermore, many of the eminent cultural figures of Victorian England did not fit the bill of Victorian virtues at all. Himmelfarb’s biographical notes on people like H. G. Wells, George Eliot, Oscar Wilde or Beatrice Potter, none of whose private lives could live up to the strict Victorian ideal, serve as vivid illustration of the diversity of this era and are woven organically into the overarching social, cultural and economic history.

Still, it’s the average Victorian with his ideals of self-reliance, hard work and responsibility in all matters public and private Himmelfarb points to as a model for modernity. Approvingly she discusses the idealization of the “bourgeois” family as a key tenet of Victorianism, which she sees a the main factor for successful reduction of out of wedlock childbirth. The emphasis Himmelfarb puts on illegitimacy, which she refers to as a social pathology, might strike more liberal readers as a bit off, especially since she almost casually associates single parenthood with alcohol and drug abuse.

Himmelfarb, herself being an influential figure within the neoconservative movement, makes no effort to hide her political affiliation which is more than obvious in all her value judgement: In favor of democracy and liberty, firmly believing in the universal applicability of values, the latter being an aspect of Victorianism Himmelfarb seems to cherish above all else, and not calling for moral fanaticism while strongly suggesting that higher moral standards are what society desperately needs. Since she keeps her political views largely to herself until the epilogue it is entirely possible to ignore her political agenda and just read the book as a knowledgeable, well-written introduction into Victorianism.

It´s been over a year now that I applied Getting Things Done (GTD) to my life. That step was largely inspired by all this very positive blog coverage within the Macintosh user communitity. All I did to start it, was getting the book and follow it.

What is Getting Things Done about?

GTD is a personal time management system, which aims to give you a mind like water (aka floating mind), which means to react on everything only with as much energy as it deserves. It does this by telling you about the tools you need to move everything (currently) unnessesary out of your mind into a place you absolutely trust. Trust must be absolut here, because if you are unsafe about the creditibilty of that place, things will start to wander back into your mind and disrupt you from getting things done.

OK. I admin it sounds a bit scary or esoteric at first, but what it means in practice is that you get a toolchain and workflows to keep you from getting confused about what to do next and prevents your desk/inbox from overflowing. It does by helping you to break down all those overwhelming projects and tasks into little, achievable pieces of work, the next actions.

One important thing about GTD is, that you are encouraged to implement it in either your professional and personal life, so it shouldn´t matter if you have to clean up the cellar or code software for your boss. Especially the latter might become subject to conflicts in many other time management systems, if they are too strict to let your boss to decide about your work time. BTW – GTD does not give you more time a day than the 24h you´ve got. It also might not make you to achieve more than you already do. But it will make you more relaxed while you do it.

The toolchain aspect talks to the geek in me. I love to optimize things using computers and software and there is a whole bunch of GTD supporting software available for the Mac. I´ve got OmniFocus for this purpose, which is a bit pricey but absolutely worth it when it comes to features and convenience. Beneath to the management related features it has a very good synchronization support i totally rely on. And, best of it, it also works on the iPhone. OmniFocus has become my place to trust in.

GTD at my professional work

My professional work management was changed fundamentelly. I used to write TODO lists before. I did this by copying the remaining tasks from previous day to a fresh piece of paper every morning, repriorize them and see all these planning gone by the first contact with my boss. Today I just put every task (or project which simply is a group of tasks that lead to a greater outcome) in OmniFocus as it occurs. Tasks that got a deadline are done within that deadline (almost), everything else if there is time. I also learned to delegate work, something I barely did before, if I am not the most perfect available person for the job.

Further I stopped to multitask. In my opinion multitasking is doing multiple things at once in a bad fashion. Multitasking from my brain´s view is nothing more than extreme expensive context switching all the time. When I work on a next action, I do that exclusively.

My colleagues don´t know that I am doing GTD or what it is. That shows GTD is not that invasive.

GTD at my home work

At home GTD got me to keep everything proper. All those papers flying around are long gone into a set of folder now holding all my legal stuff or to recycle bin.

But as it comes to next actions, I don´t do that much at home. My time at home is very short and filled up with fix blocks of work (mostly my distance learning stuff). So I gather new next actions all the time but never do them until it is absolutely necessary.

Anyways, nothing gets lost and something even gets done when I have a bit time. So its not that bad at all.

Conclusion

GTD cleaned up my head a lot. I no longer wander around asking myself what to do next. And in the end I do everything at least.

Every morning at work I can prepare for the stand up meeting in less than 5 minutes. I just need no time to synchronize TODO lists with the reality.

I almost stopped to procrastinate (Only very unpleasant things are pushed) and became more honest about doing things.

All in all I became more productive, more relaxed and happier than before. I would say, starting GTD was one of the best decisions I made in the last year.

The Alte Nordfriedhof in the Schwabing neighborhood is a tiny, disused cemetery which opened in 1868. The last burial took place in 1939. After it was destroyed in WWII what was left has been carefully restored since and is now a public park. People go there to take a walk, do sports or sit on the benches and enjoy the calm atmosphere in the midst of this busy urban neighborhood. Here are a few pictures I took last week to give you an impression of this beautiful place.

I will be going to Washington in a few weeks for a class on the interaction of history, politics, geography and architecture and, needless to say, I’m already awfully stoked. It has not been finally decided which places we will visit, but we will probably see the Capitol, the National Building Museum, the National Archives, the Wilson Center, Brookings Institution and several memorials. If everything works out as planned, we will meet with people who either work at the respective place or have done research about it, so it’s totally different than your average dull in-classroom seminar. I still have to decide on which specific subject I want to focus my research, but since I’m more interested in politics than in architecture I will probably write a paper about the changes in Washington’s status and political culture during FDR’s presidency.

Since I haven’t traveled in a long time – my last trip was to Tuszla, Bosnia in 2004 – I’m already quite nervous. The unsettling remarks of our lecturers about the capital’s strict dresscode (“Just bring the best clothes you’ve got.”) didn’t help either. I hope that I will have the chance to write a few posts during my stay, but I will in any case report about everything after my return.
