Washington – popcultural suburb Although hardcore originated in Los Angeles, where the punk scene out of some urban elitism did not include suburban teenagers, it soon came to be mainly identifed with Washington. In the late seventies Washington possessed only a small, insignificant punk and new wave scene that lacked both originality and quality. Nevertheless, [...]
This is an awesome, at times almost heartbreaking documentary about the Pixies’ reunion tour. The overall tone of loudQuietloud is incredibly personal, a bit voyeuristic at times, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable like I wasn’t supposed to be seeing this (e.g. watching Kim struggle with her drug problems or Dave going through a [...]
I really enjoy almost any kind of movie, but due to my obsession with music I tend to like movies about music even a tiny bit better than any other kind. Once, therefore, was like hitting gold for me: A sweet, totally non-stereotypical almost-love story with tons of heartbreakingly beautiful songs. Here’s the trailer: Anyway, [...]
Mission Statement I first came in contact with harDCore, Washington’s very own version of hardcore punk, approx. a year ago, while looking for a good topic for a paper. Back then I participated in a class that for the better part took place in D.C. and the requirement for the paper was just that it [...]
After swooning a bit more about new(ish) bands recently, back to an old love of mine. I went to see Camera Obscura play live in a club in Munich yesterday and, what can I say, they were amazing. They played lots of stuff from their new(ish) album, but also some of the older crowdpleasers. One [...]
Pop is clearly not dead. Hier geht’s zum myspace-Profil.
Mehr aus der Reihe Love the 80s. Die tollen Go-Betweens mit Quiet Heart aus dem Album 16 Lovers Lane. Irgendwie tolle Musik für kaltes Wetter. I just love the 80s, can’t help it.
Today’s song of the day is my all time favourite from “Who put the M in Manchester“, a cover version of Raymonde’s (never mind if you’ve never heard of them) “No one can hold a candle to you”: This song is lovely in so many ways, I’m so glad that it’s not forgotten thanks to [...]
Proof that DIY includes so much more than Tim Taylor’s Home Improvement (though I used to love that):
The Fleet Foxes’ album has been my special winter album this year. It provides the perfect soundtrack to just staring out of the window at the snowy trees outside. Mykonos is somewhat different, because it really makes me miss summer. It’s a marvelous anachronism of a song.
There it is: http://www.anti.com/media/download/708 Hope you enjoy it. So far, I haven’t really explored any of her solo work, but I really love The New Pornographers.
The Bad Brains’ Attitude, one of their early songs from the days when they were still a punk band in Washington, was one of the songs that accompanied my efforts to write a paper on the hardcore/punk scene of that city. Weirdly, it was my first paper ever on popular culture and I’m quite satisfied [...]
So, last pre-Washington post. Tomorrow United Airlines will hopefully deliver me safely to the US. Hence the song of the day by lovely Glaswegian band Camera Obscura. I will try to bring back lots of pics and experiences to feed this tiny post. Although its a rather short flight (only about 8 hours) and I [...]
80s classic Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions strangely has the power to cheer me up in almost every situation. I am not ashamed to declare that I am a huge fan of this decade, which I believe is unfairly underestimated. After all, this is the era of New Order, The Smiths and the [...]
