This attack vector is not validated by me yet. I did not try it out but I am sure it would work. If not, please let me know in the comments.

The entry point to an encrypted system is the unencrypted /boot partition. Parts of the boot loader, the kernel image and often an initial ram disk image (initrd) are stored there.

To install a backdoor in the to be attacked system, initrd is the key. While one also could use the kernel itself, using initrd is much simpler. The initrd image contains a couple of scripts that are ran when the kernel boots up and AFTER the disk was decrypted.

Before the attacker can start, she needs physical access to the system or storage. That can either be done by removing e.g. the hard disk from the system and mount it with other hardware or, if possible, to boot the system with some live system.

Now the attacker must mount the partition and copy over initrd file. In Fedora Linux the image is an gzipped cpio archive. This might be different in other distributions.

The final steps are to modify some boot script to add an password to the LUKS system. Now if the attacked user boots up the system he will add an password known to the attacker to the system. Next time the hacker gets access to the computer, she can steal some data. The modified initrd must be put back in place of course.

There are pratically no ways to protect yourself from this since as long one has access to the /boot partition, she controls almost everything in the system. TPM based signatures of the kernel and initrd could be helpful, but I don’t know much about that stuff.

As stated before I did not try it out yet. I know one thing or two about Linux and so I am pretty sure this would work. Feel free and try it out. Please tell me about your results in the comments.

Der Radiosender KCRW hat 1994 einige Songs des damals noch mehr oder weniger unbekannten Jeff Buckley mitgeschnitten und in einer Morgensendung zusammen mit einigen Interviewschnipseln ausgestrahlt, welche nun komplett online verfügbar ist. Normalerweise empfehle ich den Genuss seiner Musik nur in Maßen, da er ziemlich anstrengend sein kann (you’ll see what I mean), aber es lohnt sich die Session anzuhören, allein schon weil es von Buckley, der bereits 1997 im Alter von nur 30 Jahren ertrank, nicht gerade viele Aufnahmen gibt. Lediglich ein Studioalbum, das vielbeachtete Grace, konnte er vor seinem Tod vollenden. Jeff hatte von seinem ebenfalls früh verstorbenen Vater Tim Buckley eine beeindruckende Stimme geerbt und war ein echter Lichtblick in den überaus durchwachsenen Neunzigern. Sehr schade, dass er nicht mehr unter uns weilt.

Miersch thematisiert ein Problem, welches mir ebenfalls sehr am Herzen liegt, nämlich die neue grüne Orthodoxie, die in meinen Augen ein Symptom einer zunehmend antiintellektuellen, wissenschaftsfeindlichen Gesellschaft ist. Man verstehe mich an dieser Stelle nicht falsch. Ich achte nach Möglichkeit auf Herkunft und ethische Produktion meiner Lebensmittel, nutze den ÖPNV uvm. Auch gehöre ich nicht zu den sogenannten Klimaskeptikern. Beim aktuellen Bio-Zeitgeist geht es jedoch längst nicht mehr um sinnvollen Schutz natürlicher Ressourcen und den Erhalt des Ökosystems.

In einer Fundamentalkritik der modernen, fortschrittsorientierten  Technologiegesellschaft konstruieren sich die Anhänger dieser Ersatzreligion eine kuschelige Gegenwelt mit klaren Feindbildern, die in sich schlüssig sein mag, aber nichts mit der Realität zutun hat. Das Spektrum des Irrationalen, das sich hier versammelt, reicht vom unreflektierten Bio-Konsumenten, der das diffuse Gefühl hat, mit seinen Konsumentscheidungen die Welt zu verändern, über den Elektrosensitiven bis zum Impfgegner, der hinter dem Gesundheitssystem eine großangelegte Verschwörung vermutet. Die Grenzen verlaufen fließend, allen gemein ist, dass sie Gefühl über Verstand und Glauben über Wissenschaft stellen.

1. W. Somerset Maugham – The Magician

Bereits 1908 erschienen, ist es das älteste Buch, das ich hier vorstellen möchte. Aufgrund seines Alters ist es leicht online zu finden, z.B. hier oder hier.

Margret hält sich mit ihrem soliden, eher leidenschaftslosen Verlobten Arthur, einem Arzt, während des Sommers in Paris auf. Dass sie ihren Verlobten eher aus Vernuft denn aus Liebe heiraten will, ist recht offensichtlich. Dann lernt sie den faszinierenden Oliver Haddo kennen, der sie gleichermaßen anzieht und abstößt (er wird u.a. als ziemlich häßlich beschrieben).Haddo gelingt es, Margret für sich zu gewinnen und in seine, nun ja, kranken Experimente einzubinden. Überraschenderweise wächst der blasse Arthur über sich hinaus und kämpft für seine Margret. Wird es ihm gelingen, sie zu retten? Wird hier nicht verraten, lest gefälligst selbst.

The Magician ist ein Roman aus dem Edwardianischen Zeitalter über das Edwardianische Zeitalter. Die Faszination mit dem Übernatürlichen und der Psyche ist typisch für diese Ära. Letztlich geht es hier auch weniger um eine Darstellung alchemistischer Praktiken als um eine psychologische Erforschung menschlicher Leidenschaften.

2. Antal Szerb – Die Pendragon-Legende

Die Besonderheit dieses Alchemieromans ist die entzückende Darstellung der intellektuellen Neugier eines jungen Forschers. Janos Batky, ein in England lebender Ungar, ist ein typischer Bücherwurm, der mit seinem Forscherdrang nur allzu leicht verführbar ist (womit wir wieder beim Motiv der Leidenschaft wären). Ein mysteriöser walisischer Adliger lädt ihn auf sein Schloss ein, um seine düstere Familiengeschichte zu erforschen und tritt damit eine ganze Reihe noch viel mysteriöserer Ereignisse los. Dies ist einer dieser Romane, in denen es immerzu Nacht zu sein scheint.

3. Gordon Dahlquist – Die Dunkelbücher der Traumfresser

Damit wären wir endgültig im Bereich der Unterhaltungsliteratur angekommen. Dieses Buch hab eine weibliche Hauptfigur, die den Titel “Heldin” wirklich verdient. Durch reine Neugier, in meinen Augen ein äußerst ehrenwerter Charakterzug, gerät sie in die düsteren Machenschaften eines alchemistischen Zirkels, der ganz reale politische Macht anstrebt. Es gibt merkwürdige Gerätschaften, Kostüme und sogar einen Zeppelin in dieser Geschichte. Ein spannendes Abenteuer vor detailreicher viktorianischer Kulisse also und damit sicher auch interessant für alle Steampunk-Enthusiasten.

Immer wieder erzählen Smiths-Fans von der profunden Wirkung, die der verstörende Titeltrack auf sie hatte. Lustigerweise ist Meat is Murder der einzige Song der Platte, den ich nie leiden konnte. So, nun aber genug getextet. Wenden wir uns der Musik zu!

1. The Headmaster Ritual

“Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools/spineless swines, cemented minds” Nun ja, da stand wohl jemand nicht allzu sehr auf die Segnungen des Bildungssystems. Als Antischulhymne deutlich stilvoller als das totgenudelte Dings von Pink Floyd.

2. Rusholme Ruffians

“Scratch my name on your arm with a fountain pen / this means you really love me”. Ein gutes Beispiel für die Symbolik einer Teenagerexistenz, die in Smiths-Songs immer wieder vorkommt. Morrissey besingt eine Rummelplatzszenerie, wie sie wohl jeder schonmal erlebt hat. So einfach, so genial.

3. I want the one I can’t have

“If you ever need self-validation, just meet me in the alley by the railway station.” Wer hätte das nicht schonmal sagen wollen, sich aber nicht getraut? Das geniale an Morrisseys Texten ist genau das. Er bringt die geheimen, peinlichen Empfindungen und die ganze Unsicherheit, die sie hervorrufen auf den Punkt. Ein Song mit einem vielschichtigen Text. Aussichtslose Liebe, Anspielungen auf eine Randexistenz und Kriminalität vermischen sich zu etwas, was man wohl nur auf der emotionalen Ebene vollkommen erschließen kann.

4. What she said

“I smoke ’cause I’m hoping for an early death / and I need to cling to something”. Eine gewisse Morbidität gehört zur Jugend dazu, warum auch immer. Dylan hat in seinen frühen Jahren auch ständig vom Tod gesungen. Die gute Nachricht ist, dass man das meisten überlebt: “It took a tattooed boy from Birkenhead to really, really open her eyes”.

5. The joke isn’t funny anymore

“When you laugh about people who feel so very lonely / their only desire is to die“. Awwww! Wer jetzt noch nicht versteht, warum Morrissey auch “pope of mope” genannt wird, dem ist auch nicht mehr zu helfen.

6. How soon is now?

“I am human and I need to be loved / just like everybody else does”. Krasse Gitarre, Herr Marr! That said, kann man eigentlich nur hinzufügen, dass das Nichtgeliebtwerden ein ständiges Motiv in Songs von Morrissey ist. Ach, und, liebe Freunde von der Lyricsveröffentlicherfraktion, es heißt “son and heir” und nicht “sun and air”. Jesus!

7. Nowhere Fast

“I’d like to drop my trousers to the world / I am a man of means / of slender means”. Ein eher unscheinbarer Track, der trotzdem mein Favorit auf der Platte ist. Man achte im Video auf Johnny Marr, der ganz lässig weiter an seiner Fluppe zieht obwohl er offensichtlich ständig Rauch in die Augen bekommt. So klein und doch so cool!

8. Well I wonder

“Well I wonder / do you see me in your dreams?” Einer der wenigen Songs, der wirklich komplett ironiefrei daherkommt. Schöner verzweifeln.

9. Barbarism begins at home

Analog zum ersten Track geht’s hier um die Ungerechtigkeiten und Brutalität der Erwachsenen gegenüber den Heranwachsenden. Der Text spricht in seiner Schlichtheit für sich.

10. Meat is murder

Es soll Leute geben, die wegen des Songs Vegetarier geworden sind. Auch wenn ich den Pathos dieser Band normalerweise liebe, sorry, ich finde dieses Lied einfach lächerlich.

Mind like water, I thought. I went into myself and thought what could have happened. There came up some facts:

• Some web app generates charts using jfreechart
• jfreechart uses AWT to generate the graphics
• Java AWT is native code that uses the unterlying graphics subsystem, on Linux the nearest X server
• I was connected using ssh with ForwardX11 on

Like Jerlock Holmes I combined the facts and came up with a solution:

unset DISPLAY

I put this statement into the Tomcat start script (before the start of Java of course). This will break the chain between my local X-Server and Java.

The server is still running well.

Don´t get me wrong. I highly recommend to use OpenJDK if you don´t feel to need otherwise. But being a Java developer myself I find some things really annoying, so I still stick to Sun´s version of the great Java:

• Speed – For example Netbeans runs way faster on Sun´s Java than on OpenJDK. Being my workplace for most of the time, that really matters
• Font rendering – In Gnome and Fedora Netbeans looks not that well on OpenJDK, because anti-aliasing seems not to work too well. On Sun´s JDK in contrast…
• Memory management seems to be a bit better on Sun´s JDK at the moment
• Nimbus Look and Feel – I just like it

Sun (Oracle by now) offers two flavors of the JDK to download – one using RPM under the cover and one using cpio. Both come inside a big shell script aka self extracting archive that forces you to agree the licence before allowed to install.

Although there is a RPM version, it isn´t integrated into the operating system very tightly. On Fedora and derived distributions (I will only mention Fedora from here) there is that great “alternatives” system (actually it came from Debian, as far as I recall). This is a text file database, some scripts and a lot of symlinks. It lets several pieces of software share common names for programs and gives the user the choice which one to use.

On Fedora OpenJDK and GCJ share a lot of files, e.g. /usr/bin/java, /usr/bin/javac, etc. The Sun RPMs extract the files to some non-standard place, /usr/java/*. To make Sun´s JDK the system default, one has to change a lot of files and links, or use the alternatives system.

Since there are still plenty of files to provide alternatives for, I wrote a little script that will do the work. I tested it with Sun´s JDK 1.6.0_18 (RPM) on Fedora Core 12, but it should work with all versions from the Java 1.6.0 stem on Fedora and derived distributions.

One word of warning: The script is provided AS IS. I do not take any responsibility for whatever happens to you, your computer, etc. due using this script You use the script on YOUR OWN RISK.

Stay calm, I finally figured it out. While fiddling around I found two very nice things in the internet that I want to share with you.

First, I learned how to debug the SSL problems on Sun´s JSSE documentation. You will find a very comprehensible example of a Java SSL debug session.

But the real gem I found was Portecle, a small, overlooked utterly useful tool I wouldn´t ever remove from my tool chain. Portecle is a Swing-based frontend to JSSE keystores (it is a replacement for keytool). It actually works (In contrast to many other outdated or useless tools that fill the same gap) and beside many other things, it enables you to import chained certificate files. Check it out.

Fortunally I found out about ”ALTER table ENGINE=…;”.

Since I am very lazy I created myself a little helper, that generates per MyISAM table a matching ALTER TABLE statement. So all I had to do was to copy the result of the query back to mysql and lean back.

The statement I talk about is:

select concat('ALTER TABLE `', table_schema, '`.`', table_name, '` ENGINE InnoDB;')
from information_schema.tables where table_schema <> 'mysql'
AND table_schema <> 'information_schema'
AND engine = 'MyISAM';

It queries the information_schema for MyISAM tables outside mysql (the database) and outputs a corresponding statement.

Since 6.0 java defaults to allowing connects to running JVM-processes on the same computer. Fortunally this doesn´t apply to remote connects. Unfortunally jconsole just quits with a “Connection failed”.

To get jconsole to work from a remote computer, some properties must be set on start of the JVM:

java -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.local.only=false -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote JMX Auth Settings...

There are different documents for Java 5.0 and Java 6.0. Please consult them for the authentication settings.

Herbst in Peking – Bakschischrepublik

Man merkt am Text, dass hier schon nicht mehr viel war mit dem Sieg des Sozialismus. Beachtenswert und typisch für Ostmusik ist, dass die tatsächlich spielen können und auch nicht vor einem netten Arrangement zurückschrecken.

Feeling B – Artig

Feeling B waren echte Pioniere. Das Album, auf dem dieses Lied drauf ist, war als erste Punkplatte offiziell in der DDR zu erwerben. Drei der ehemaligen Mitglieder sind dann übrigens zu Rammstein gewechselt.

Die Skeptiker – Pierre und Luce

Eine Jugendliebe von mir waren die Skeptiker. Musikalisch betrachtet ist der Kram einfach laut und schnell. Die Texte sind allerdings durchaus beachtlich. Dieses Lied, das meines Erachtens aus den 90ern ist, handelt im Schnelldurchlauf den Inhalt eines Romans von Romain Rolland ab.

Ute Freudenberg – Jugendliebe

Apropos Jugendliebe. Dieses Lied kann man nicht nicht kennen, wenn man aus dem Osten kommt. Gerade weil es so kitschig ist, ist es ein immerwährender Partyklassiker bei dem sich selbst die hartgesottensten Zyniker ein Tränchen verdrücken. Die kennen den Text übrigens auch alle auswendig ;-)

City – Am Fenster

Zu diesem Lied, ein vertontes Gedicht übrigens, braucht es keine Worte. Enjoy!

Gerhard Gundermann – Linda

Nach meiner Meinung der allerbeste Liedermacher der DDR und ein beeindruckender Mensch! Leider hat der Sensenmann den singenden Baggerfahrer dann doch noch viel zu früh erwischt.

Karussell – Als ich fortging (Coverversion von Staubkind)

An diesem Lied scheiden sich zumeist die Geister. Manche finden’s unerträglich kitschig. Der Text ist wieder ein vertontes Gedicht ( von Gisela Steineckert).

Puhdys – Wenn ein Mensch lebt

Kein Post über DDR-Musik ohne die Puhdys. Der wahre Klassiker ist natürlich “Alt wie ein Baum” (noch so ein Mitgröhlding und nicht so ganz nach meinem Geschmack). Dieses Stück ist aus dem Kultfilm “Die Legende von Paul und Paula”. Den Film fand ich immer blöde (Sie wird schwanger, obwohl sie weiß, dass sie es nicht überlebt. Das ist nicht romantisch sondern bescheuert!). Besser “Spur der Steine” mit Manfred Krug anschauen, jawoll!

Freygang – Kartenhaus

Nun ja, der Text spricht für sich. Eigentlich eher eine Bluesband aber definitv mit Punkattitüde.

Inchtabokatables – You chained me up

Eine Band aus der Neuzeit, wie es in aktuellen DDR-Kochbüchern immer so schön heißt. Hab ich in den 90ern abgöttisch geliebt. Völlig gerechtfertigt, finde ich. Subway to Sally sind in dem Kontext noch zu nennen, allerdings kann ich deren Mittelalterkram heute nicht mehr wirklich ertragen.

Keimzeit – Kling Klang

Nach meinem aktuellen Informationsstand (Irrtum vorbehalten) haben Keimzeit zu DDR-Zeiten kein Album veröffentlichen dürfen, dafür aber bis jetzt umso mehr. Bei alternativ angehauchten Ostteenies und älterem Volk kommen sie nie aus der Mode. Konzerte von ihnen (gibt’s in ganz D) sind absolut empfehlenswert, auch wenn man die Band nicht kennt. Ich war bei einem Konzert im Münchner Backstage und selbst eine Gruppe kenntnisfreier Amerikaner waren hin und weg. Leider fehlt hier die komplette erste Strophe, mehr war aber nicht aufzutreiben.

Das Lied vom kleinen Trompeter

Kein Rock, sondern zum Abschluss ein wenig Propaganda. Wird gerne im betrunkenen Zustand noch gesungen und die eine oder andere Träne im Gedenken an den tapferen kleinen Trompeter vergossen.

Mein schönster youtube-Fund der letzten Woche: Der irische Dichter W.B. Yeats hat zu Lebzeiten für die BBC einige seiner Gedichte gelesen, darunter auch eines meiner Lieblingsgedichte, das von Thoreau inspirierte The Lake Isle of Innisfree. Yeats intoniert sehr lustig, was er eigensinnigerweise damit begründet, dass Poesie nun mal Poesie sei und deswegen nicht wie Prosa gelesen werden sollte.

Nach wochenlanger Ernährung von Kiosk- und Kneipenfutter, hat mich heute doch mal wieder der Kochehrgeiz gepackt. In der morgigen Bentobox sind daher nur furchtbar gesunde Sachen. Im unteren Teil steckt eine große, leider verdeckte Portion Sobanudeln mit Fertigdip (gibt’s in jedem Asienladen, heiß Soba Tsuyu), den ich mit etwas Wasabipulver gepimpt hab. Darauf liegen gebratene Pilze und Paprika mit Sesam und etwas Rohkost (Tomate, Gurke, Frühlingszwiebel).

Im oberen Teil steckt Obst, Nüsse, Instant-Misosuppe und schneller Milchreis (aus Reisflocken) mit braunem Zucker. Etwas Deko konnte ich mir nicht verkneifen ;-)

Bereits zu Lebzeiten entstand mit Strange Parallel ein ganz guter Dokumentarfilm über Smith, den netterweise jemand komplett, wenn auch in mäßiger Qualität, auf youtube gestellt hat. Bitteschön:

Einer dieser schändlicherweise vernachlässigten Acts ist die schwedische Eurodiscoheldin Sally Shapiro. Wurde derartige Musik in den letzten Jahren schlicht unter der Kategorie “Trash” subsumiert, darf man sich jetzt wieder ganz ungeniert an hopsigem Popgedudel erfreuen, wenn auch nur auf typisch ironisierte Hipstermanier. Nun ja. Ich finde, dass ’süß’ immer und überall eine legitime ästhetische Kategorie ist. Nicht, dass Sally Shapiro doofe Musik wäre. Auch gute Unterhaltung ist nicht so einfach zu machen und die Texte sind ausnehmend klug und witzig. Hier mein aktueller Lieblingssong namens Jackie Jackie von der älteren Platte Disco Romance.

Although hardcore originated in Los Angeles, where the punk scene out of some urban elitism did not include suburban teenagers, it soon came to be mainly identifed with Washington. In the late seventies Washington possessed only a small, insignificant punk and new wave scene that lacked both originality and quality. Nevertheless, even the rather banal amateur bands that dominated the early punk scene were perceived as revolutionary in a city that, despite its political status, could not claim to have an exciting, innovative music scene.

As Simon Reynolds argues in his must-read book on postpunk Rip It Up And Start Again, innovative popculture movements have the greatest impact when they cease to be hip among the urban crowd and are picked up by the allegedly less hip people in the suburbs. Unlike other hardcore scenes, however, Washington’s scene was not dominated by the suburbs. In fact, it tended to be as elitist and condescending towards the suburban crowd as the L.A. punk scene. Yet, as much as the suburban youth of Los Angeles looked up to their local urban punk scene for inspiration, a young Washingtonian interested in punk looked up to New
York. Despite its political eminence, Washington was merely a suburb of New York in terms of popular culture, a place designated to consume and reproduce music imported from the vibrant centers of cultural life. In other words, Washington was totally uncool.

The Bad Brains

In such an environment, young people are naturally hungry for, well, anything, so it’s no surprise that just one band can make a huge difference. For Washington, this band was called The Bad Brains. As much as Washington was an unlikely center of alternative music, the Bad Brains were unlikely punks as African Americans in a predominantly white genre. Originally a jazz funk band, they were introduced to punk around 1977 and felt immediately attracted to its unrelenting rage that fitted their own sentiment. That the Bad Brains were easily accepted within the Washington punk scene of the late seventies was likely a result of its marginality and therefore lack of a close-knit community. By contrast, Los Angeles, which already possessed a large preexisting punk scene even before hardcore emerged in the early eighties, tended to exclude people that did not fit into the punk archetype of the white young man.

Although the Bad Brains would eventually move to New York and switch to reggae, they undoubtedly were the most important influence on the D.C. hardcore scene. On a musical level the Bad Brains distinguished themselves from other punk bands by adopting high speed in addition to punk’s intensity and volume as a defining characteristic of their style. Playing with the highest possible speed developed into a typical feature of Washington hardcore. Ironically, this African American band provided white teenagers in Washington not only with an aesthetic ideal but also with a local cultural identity to distinguish themselves from the black majority in the capital. With go-go, a D.C. version of funk, African Americans had their own distinctive local music. For Washington’s white youth, hardcore was an opportunity to create their own local subculture.

Additionally, on a philosophical level, the Bad Brains had more to offer than punk’s habitual nihilism which still dominated most other hardcore scenes. Even before they embraced Rastafarian religion, their lyrics were influenced by a self-help book from the Great Depression, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. The book advertised Positive Mental Attitude, essentially a concept of positive thinking, which the Bad Brains included in their song Attitude: “Don’t care what you may say/ We got that attitude/ Don’t care what you may do/ We got that attitude/ We got that PMA”. Again, due to the lack of a coherent punk scene in Washington during the late seventies, this deviation from punk’s set of rules was possible. Here’s some nice footage of the Bad Brains performing Attitude:

“Vor fünfhundert Jahren ist allmählich die Wahrnehmung des Äußeren gekippt, da haben die Leute ja tatsächlich das Weltbild einer flachen Erde und einem Himmel und einer Hölle gegen das heliozentrische Weltbild eingetauscht. Vielleicht kippt als nächstes die Wahrnehmung des Inneren, also vielleicht ein Ende des Menschenbilds als Individuum sondern als technologisch vernetztes Kollektiv.”

I first came in contact with harDCore, Washington’s very own version of hardcore punk, approx. a year ago, while looking for a good topic for a paper. Back then I participated in a class that for the better part took place in D.C. and the requirement for the paper was just that it had to do something with that place. Since I already fulfilled all my study requirements back then I thought I could give a somewhat risky popular culture topic a shot. I always regret to just produce tons of text for the lecturer and the institute archive, so I decided to share my insights about harDCore on this blog, knowing it’s a fringe issue even for pop culture geeks, but hoping someone out there might enjoy it. I will summarize the imo most interesting parts (e.g. leave out all the overly scientific babble) and garnish them with some music clips from the beloved youtube. I intend to introduce you to songs I deem worthy of knowing and write a short bibliographic review of the books I used.

Intro – The death of punk and the emergence of hardcore

It is fair to say that the emergence of a small, but highly influential and dymanic punk scene in Washington around 1980 can be considered a miracle. While obviously being the political center, Washington had never been know for any kind of cultural avantgarde. Despite this disadvantage of not being able to built upon an existing local tradition, this small scene spearheaded a sub-movement within punk. In addition to the invention of a particularly fast and unadorned music which later almost paradoxically evolved into a particularly emotional type of punk, this scene created a unique mindset centered around personal integrity, abstinence from drugs, commitment to communal politics and an anti-music industry stance. As a consequence, the punk scene of Washington D.C. developed into a role model for American independent music while retaining an ardent localism.

When punk died on 14 January 1978 at a Sex Pistols concert in San Francisco with Johnny Rotten’s question to the audience  “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”, it left behind two almost antithetical children, post-punk and hardcore punk. While post-punk is more a collective term than a genre, including groups like Joy Division, The B-52s and Gang of Four, all of which were at least vaguely inspired by first wave punk, it rejected punk’s musical limitations and experimented with a number of different influences such as disco, reggae or funk, laying also an important fundament for what would become known as world music. In that sense, post-punk is an example of cultural hybridity, transcending boundaries of genre and dissolving traditions.

Hardcore, the other epigone of punk, aspired to revive punk as a pure, raw outlet for anger and frustration lacking any kind of art school sophistication. An important factor in the emergence of hardcore was the social and cultural climate of Reagan’s America, characterized by a combination of (what at least was perceived as) a repressive conservative culture and a lingering economic recession. Hardcore punk became the subcultural home for many teenagers who identified themselves as outsiders in this America, which did not seem to hold the same opportunities for them as it did for their parents’ generation. In the era of preppy-style conformity, kids from the suburbs of pretty much every urban center in the US looked for inspiration to a dying popcultural phenomenon, made it their own and in turn practically reinvented it.

Just to give you a first impression, here’s some footage from a Minor Threat concert, with all the nice typical features of a hardcore concert: screaming, noise, lots of, erm, body contact and audience participation.

Scheinbar ist dies die gleiche Form von Vertrauen, das unsere Alt- und Neukanzlerin dem Altinnen- und Neufinanzminister Wolfgang Schäuble entgegenbringen will. Dieser hatte schließlich auch vergessen, dass er einen gewissen Karl-Heinz Schreiber getroffen und 100.000DM von ihm erhalten hat. Nur lange, behutsame Behandlung durch kritische Nachfrager konnte den Nebel in Schäubles Kopf lüften.

Ein ähnliches Erlebnis muss wohl auch Frau Merkel in dem Moment gehabt haben, der im folgenden Video festgehalten ist. Man sieht den Nebel förmlich über die Felder ziehen und was darunter sichtbar wird ist sehr hässlich.
